This gnarly old giant exhibits a profusion of burls, burl being an abnormal growth of wood caused by injury, infestation, or fungus intrusion. The wood pattern can become very convoluted and confused in burl wood, which can occur on all types of trees being a condition of wood not a variety of wood.
